  1. Lizard of the family Varanidae, found in
  2. Africa, S Asia, and Australasia. Monitors are
  3. generally large and carnivorous, with
  4. well-developed legs and claws, and a long
  5. powerful tail which can be swung in defence.
  6. Monitors include the Komodo dragon, the
  7. largest of all lizards, and also the slimmer
  8. Salvador's monitor Varanus salvadorii which
  9. may reach 2.5 m/8 ft. Several other monitors,
  10. such as the lace monitor Varanus varius and
  11. the perentie Varanus giganteus of Australia
  12. and the Nile monitor Varanus niloticus of
  13. Africa, are up to 2 m/6 ft long.
